GrandServe

Grand River Hospital and the Foundation have embarked on an incredible journey to revolutionize your hospital experience. GrandServe is a new digital experience program that will transform patient experience for the better. The first phase of GrandServe is a new, free high-speed WiFi network for patients and visitors at Grand River Hospital. Phase two of GrandServe will incorporate the addition of device borrowing in partnership with Kitchener Public Library and enTECH to ensure equitable access for all patients. Down the road, we plan to add a concierge service, valet parking and a new welcome program, starting right from your arrival. All this will be powered by amazing technology and volunteers.

GrandServe, our project aimed at improving patient experience at the hospital, is launching improved, free guest WiFi across both campuses on Sunday, February 27, 2022. The new WiFi network has enhanced bandwidth to enable patients and family members who bring their own devices to access the internet and stream TV shows and movies for entertainment. This has been made possible by a $277,000 investment by the Foundation to upgrade Grand River Hospital's existing infrastructure and WiFi bandwidth.

The new WiFi, called “GrandServe – free patient WiFi,” will be available in your list of WiFi options. It can still be accessed the same as any other WiFi service.

The new WiFi network is called “GrandServe – free patient WiFi” and will be available in your list of WiFi options. The login will request that you accept the terms and conditions and enter a phone number OR email address to create a free account. Once you have created an account, you will have access to the improved WiFi. Creating an account will also allow you to automatically connect to the WiFi if you return to the hospital in the future.

If you do not have a phone number or email address, you can use the hospital number: (519) 749-4300. Since we do not check or confirm this information, it’s a great alternative to connect.

B-Y-O-D stands for “Bring Your Own Device". This model allows patients and care partners to use Grand River Hospital's new, free high-speed WiFi network to connect with family and friends outside of the hospital. It also allows for streaming of entertainment services like Netflix.

The majority of our patients and guests are already bringing their own mobile devices to connect with loved ones and to use streaming services for entertainment. This is a trend seen at many hospitals in Canada. Grand River Hospital Foundation has recently launched a free, high-speed WiFi network to support a Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) model as the first phase of our GrandServe program.

Entertainment is not covered by OHIP and is a very expensive servicethere was always a charge for Health Hub television services and, prior to the pandemic, to access WiFi at the hospital. Hospitals are publicly funded, and must prioritize patient care, equipment, research and other life-saving work. However, as a future phase of the GrandServe program, we will be rolling out a free device lending program in partnership with Kitchener Public Library and enTECH to address this issue for patients who do not have their own devices.

Yes. However, we are looking at entertainment options beyond Health Hub T.V.

Grand River Hospital and the Foundation are not responsible for any lost or stolen items patients and families bring into the hospital. If your device or any other belongings go missing while in hospital, please notify the care unit manager immediately.

The following can help you keep your belongs safe:

  • Labelling: Include name and phone number
  • Storing: Keep belongings in a safe place, do not leave them unprotected
  • Tracking: Ensure belongings are not left in bed, linens, food trays or any concealed place where they may be lost or accidentally thrown out

Scotland's Yard

Scotland’s Yard is a community initiative focused on augmenting care closer to home for children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Inspired by Scotland, a young cancer survivor, a group of dedicated friends and neighbours are working to raise $50 million in support of Grand River Hospital projects that will help children, and their families, get more care locally.

Scotland (Scottie) Santos is 4 years old and was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at just three months of age. She is one of over 200 children in our community currently undergoing cancer care. In addition to receiving care at Grand River Hospital, these children and their families regularly travel to other communities for specialized treatment or testing. The group behind Scotland’s Yard envisions more and more of that treatment or testing happening here at home, lessening the burden on families. It’s a long-term vision, but a necessary one to support the kids on their cancer journey.
