Black Health and Wellness in Our Community

February is Black History Month, a time dedicated to honouring and understanding the impact of African and Caribbean heritage in Canada. This year’s theme is Black health and wellness.

At Grand River Hospital, we are proud to recognize the contributions of Black Canadians in shaping our country and our health care system, including the contributions of our Black team members, made up of staff, physicians and volunteers. We are committed to educating ourselves about Black history and anti-Black racism, not just in February, but year round.⁣

That said, it is important to recognize and address the racial disparities in Canadian health care and, in particular, the health inequities experienced by Black Canadians. Many factors contribute to the gaps in health and health care that Black Canadians face, including but not limited to a lack of access/unequal access to health services, anti-Black racism, provider bias, stereotyping, inadequate data on racialized health experiences in Canada, and social determinants of health.

With that in mind, in addition to continuing to make positive changes through our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy at Grand River, we wanted to take the time to highlight local groups and health resources that offer programs and services for Black community members—these are just some of the resources that are available locally. In addition, we've also included some resources that may be helpful to organizations and individuals that are working to educate themselves and address racism, including anti-Black racism, discrimination and inequities.
